Yesterday evening, while my toddler was occupied by his Daddy, I had about 10 minutes to myself (and can I just say, 10 minutes is like precious gold dust in these lockdown times). So, with some beautiful sunshine and blue sky, I decided to get out my camera and photograph the solitary Allium in our garden that’s recently bloomed.
Equipped with a 50mm portrait lens and a basic extension tube, I had a mini photo shoot with a very obliging flower. If you’ve tried photographing toddlers, flowers are a posing dream come true! I had a little tinker around with colour versus black and white.
I think both sets of images have their merits. The black and white are potentially a bit abstract. Without the colour to inform you what the flower is, they’re potentially more confusing to understand. But I like them, and wanted to share my efforts.
Below are the colour images. They involve no processing wizardry. The purple was that vibrant in the sunshine. I’m rather fond of them too! I have to say though, I’m getting better at this editing malarkey. I took nearly 40 photos in just ten minutes, and chopped them down to the last 12 here. Picking just 2 would just be too tricky, but I’m trying to get better at self evaluating my own photos.
So which set of photos do you prefer? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would say that some of the compositions lend themselves better to B&W. To me the one’s with the stem included work well as B&W
Thanks for your feedback Steve. I somehow favour the black and white ones too.
