So it seems there was a trickier fault at work than I could fathom. My previous host provider couldn’t help either, but in essence, some images would upload whilst others wouldn’t – but there was no logical explanation for it.
The solution seems to be shifting the entire website over to a new host. Whilst all my posts have transferred, absolutely none of my images have and none of the formatting or customisation of my previous site has copied over.
In polite terms, imagine me having a mini paddy screaming in the rain on a distant hilltop. That about covers it. What it means is, I have to start again…
My plan is to draw a line under old posts and not go back adding missing images.
Here is what I had to do, to get my website shipshape again:
- Choose a new theme. Let’s just say I did this more than once, as I couldn’t settle on a theme I liked! I finally selected a theme with a light background this time, as dark backgrounds supposedly cause eye strain. Customising all aspects of the theme, including layout, text, colours, headers, sidebars, icons.
- Reinstalling social media icons and adjusting all the settings via the Ultimate Social Media Plugin – I had to reread one of my own posts to remember what to do!
- Reuploading, renaming and reinserting images to relevant galleries and posts. This also involves putting the new watermark on.
- Added featured images to each posts, as this is what the new theme requires. Then had to work out how to centralise them as they were all left aligned and not pleasing me! Oh, then removed the featured images as the theme I finally settled on didn’t require them! D’oh.
- Ensured all categories and tags were approriate. Did a general bit of housekeeping.
- Tidied up how I store images outside of the website. Now I have a logical filing system, so if things go pear shaped in the future, it should be easy enough to find the relevant images.
I hope you like the new, fresher looking Smudge on the Lens site. It has been nice to finally show it some attention after a bit of a hiatus.
